"You should always respect what you are and your culture because if your art is going to mean anything, that is where it comes from." — Romare Bearden

Our Story: Rooted in Legacy, Growing in Community.

Welcome to Vesey Lane Goods, where we believe that every family, every neighborhood, and every generation carries a story worth preserving. Founded by Robin Wilson—a Detroit-based artist, educator, and entrepreneur—our brand exists at the intersection of heritage and imagination. We are more than a stationery and lifestyle company; we are a living archive, a cultural hub, and one of the most welcoming local gift shops in Detroit.

Deeply rooted in a rich generational family legacy of artists, creatives, and educators, our business represents a continuation of those who came before us. We proudly honor the spirit of Narvell & Burl Henry Vesey, the matriarch and patriarch of the Vesey family whose endurance, leadership, and artistry inspired our name.

Our Journey

Long before we established a permanent physical storefront, Vesey Lane Goods began as an extension of Robin’s long-standing artistic practice and a heartfelt desire to create an original line of greeting cards. In those early days, we operated entirely on a mobile retail model, sharing our handcrafted and printed cards at various local markets and neighborhood pop-up events. These formative experiences allowed us to ground our roots in Detroit's local arts and small business ecosystem, gradually building a loyal customer base that valued meaningful storytelling and cultural preservation.

In September 2022, Vesey Lane Goods was formally incorporated in the State of Michigan. This milestone marked our official evolution from a mobile market vendor into an emerging name among gift shops in Detroit. Guided by our core mission to champion handcrafted artistry and provide cultural storytelling opportunities for local makers, we began mapping out a future that extended far beyond traditional retail.

September 2022: Firmly Formed

Our dream of building a permanent community sanctuary came to fruition through collaborative partnerships. Backed by the Michigan Black Business Alliance through its Capital Connect program and empowered by funding from ProsperUs Detroit, we proudly opened our first brick-and-mortar location in Detroit's historic East Village at 9920 Kercheval Ave.

Establishing a permanent destination allowed us to expand our curated selection to include stunning, unique home decor in Detroit alongside our signature heritage gifts in Detroit. The shop quickly blossomed into a neighborhood sanctuary where guests could experience a tangible sense of connection, fellowship, and belonging.

The year 2025 stood as a powerful testament to our community-centered craft, celebrating one year in our storefront and three years in business. We experienced incredible financial growth, increasing our annual revenue by nearly 80% year-over-year. This milestone year brought amazing updates to our East Village space like:

  • Creating a welcoming gathering place

  • Uplifting Local Artists

  • Cultural Recognition

  • Empowering the next generation
