Book Club Meeting
On Thursday, July 17, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM, join us for our weekly summer book club at Vesey Lane Goods. Our first book club selection is “Brother, I’m Dying” by Edwidge Danticat. "Brother, I'm Dying" is a poignant memoir by Edwidge Danticat that explores themes of family, loss, and the immigrant experience. The book alternates between Danticat's childhood in Haiti and her adult life in the United States, focusing on her father's death and her uncle's struggles as he flees violence in Haiti. It is a finalist for the National Book Award and is noted for its emotional depth and social commentary on the Haitian experience. The memoir combines personal history with sociopolitical context, paying homage to Danticat's family and their resilience (Source: National Endowment for the Arts).

Live Art Auction
Join us for a live art auction at Vesey Lane Goods. On Saturday, July 12, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, view and bid on works by April Anue-Shipp, Inez Brown, Larry Green, Faye Gibson, Cheryl Haithco, Trish Howell, Ruby Johnson, Patricia Kabore, Dora Kelley, Jennifer Maples, and Deborah Walters.
All works are a part of our current art exhibit, “Ase: Unity, Peace, & Power,” which will come to a close on July 19th. Therefore, we invite you to view and bid on the works of art that are still available for purchase. Light refreshments and food will be served. General admission is free.

Cass Tech: Jewel of Detroit Author Talk with Hugh Johnson
On Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, join us for an afternoon conversation with Hugh Johnson, a graduate of Cass Technical High School and author of "Cass Tech: Jewel of Detroit." He will share his experience as a former Cass Technical High School student, his research process for writing about notable alumni, followed by a book signing.

A native Detroiter, Megan Rizzo is a freelance artist and published illustrator. She is coming to Vesey Lane Goods to talk about her career and creative process for designing illustrations. Participants will have an opportunity to view a selection of her illustrations as she talks about her creative process and talks about her artistic career.

Stitched Collage with Najma Wilson
Participants are invited to create collages from fabric scraps and simple stitching techniques led by a master fiber artist and educator. The workshop will give participants an interactive experience and an opportunity to engage in a meditative community event and create something new from repurposed fabrics, needle and thread. Remembering the Legacy Historical Tour (Evening)
Learn about African American freedom fighters Denmark Vesey, Rosa Parks, Dorothy Height, and Coretta Scott King in our hour and fifteen-minute guided tour at Vesey Lane Goods. Visitors will learn about the self-educated Black man, Denmark Vesey, who planned the most extensive slave rebellion in U.S. History. The tour will also cover African American historical figures such as Rosa Parks, Dorothy Height, and Coretta Scott King. It will cover aspects of their social justice work during the Civil Rights Movement.
There is an afternoon and an evening tour. Attendees must be age 16 and older. Tickets are $10.00 per person. To join us, register today.

Flowing Beginnings: The Art of Acrylic Pouring with Deborah Walters
Experience the mesmerizing allure of liquid art as Deborah unveils her recent creations, offering a unique glimpse into the beauty of flowing colors. Attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to view stunning examples of Walters’s artwork, each piece a testament to the fluid dynamics and vivid transformations possible with acrylic paint pouring.
Deborah will lead a walkthrough demonstration, unraveling the secrets behind two distinctive paint pouring processes. Participants will gain insight into mixing, layering, and pouring techniques, empowering them to create their own fluid masterpieces. All necessary supplies will be provided, inviting attendees to experiment and express their creativity. Whether you choose to engage with a single method or intersect both approaches in your artwork, this event is designed to unlock new dimensions of artistic exploration. This workshop cost $50.00 dollars per person.

As the former Director of Interior Design at Kelly Wearstler, she honed her vision for the future of craft. Join us and participate in a communal sewing circle to experiment and learn different types of embroidery styles through various applications and projects. All ages and experience levels are encouraged — bring old or new friends, family, children, neighbors— all are welcome.
This is the first of five classes that Leana will lead. Each session costs $25.00 dollars and includes your supplies and materials. Also, light snacks and refreshments will be served. Register today!

Asé: Unity, Peace, & Power
Now through Saturday, July 19, 2025, Asé: Unity, Peace, and Power art exhibit will be on display to the public. Come and view the paintings, drawings, and soft sculpture of eleven dynamic Detroit-based artists at Vesey Lane Goods.
Asé is a Yoruba word that means "yes" or "I'm with you." This exhibit represents the unity, peace, and power of women. Artist who are in our exhibit include April Anue Shipp, Inez Brown, Larry Green, Faye Gibson, Cheryl Haithco, Trish Howell, Ruby Johnson, Patricia Kabore, Dora Kelley, Jennifer Maples, and Deborah Walters.
Gallery viewing hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 12 noon to 6:30 PM. Admission is free.

Asé: Unity, Peace, & Power
